The Best of the Festival Award was selected by the audience, and “Silver Linings Playbook” edged out “Quartet” by only two one-hundreths of a point. Both films were absolutely loved by the audiences with everyone commenting how they were two of the best films they had seen in a long time. The next highest rated films of the festival were “The Lord is Not on Trial Here Today,” “The High Price of Victory,” “Spaghetti Fur Zwei,” and “The Cardboard Bernini.”

“Silver Linings Playbook” – 2012

Our opening night film, “Silver Linings Playbook,” premiered at the Asheville Cinema Festival on November 1st, 2012 prior to its release across the United States on November 16th, 2012. This film opened to major critical success and has since earned numerous accolades. It received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Russell, in addition to achieving the rare feat of being nominated in all four acting categories. Jennifer Lawrence’s outstanding performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, which she also won at the Golden Globe Awards and the Screen Actors Guild.

“The Artist – 2011″

“The Artist” is a 2011 French romantic comedy film in the style of a black-and-white silent film. The film was the opening and closing night film for the 2011 Festival. This showing of the film was the first time the film had been shown in the United States after a incredulous opening internationally.  Following the Asheville Cinema Festival, “The Artist” was released across the United States a few short weeks later and received strongly positive reviews from critics and won many accolades. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered. The film was nominated for six Golden Globes, the most of any 2011 film, and won three: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Original Score, and Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won five, The Artist went on to become the most awarded French film in history.

Paul Cohen

An independent motion picture executive who has created numerous successful distribution and production companies such as Analysis Films, Moonbeam Productions, and Aries Films. He also served as CEO/President and co-founder of Manhattan Pictures International where he marketed, acquired and released several Oscar nominated films and has won several awards at Sundance and Cannes.

Andrew Wonder

Beginning as a field producer for MTV at the age of 17, Director/Cinematographer Andrew Wonder has never been one to waste time. At 23 he won MTV’s MADE an Emmy award for directing it’s 200th Episode. Then, at 25, he made an appearance on the NBC’s TODAY Show, for breaking into New York subway tunnels and climbing the Williamsburg Bridge to make films. Andrew has also worked with film greats like Paul Schrader, Antoine Fuqua and Harris Savides ASC teaching them how to apply new technology to their productions. Today he’s raiding drug cartels with the DEA, capturing the final days of NASA’s space shuttles in 3D and expanding his education program that teaches high school students team work and leadership–through the hierarchy of filmmaking. Editor and Post Production genius with over 30+ years of experience in the entertainment industry. He has worked on several films during his career including “Good Morning Vietnam,” “Rain Man,” “Sleepers,” “Toys,” “Bugsy,” and “Wag the Dog”. He is known as the ‘Go To Guy’ in the production industry for several of Hollywood’s top films.

Joseph Stinson

A screenwriter of several original scripts (“Sudden Impact” and “City Heat”), the man behind the quote “Go ahead, make my day”, and an author of two books. He lectures and conducts workshops at several prestigious film schools including The American Film Institute in LA, Drexel University’s School of Media Arts & Design in Philadelphia, and at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Best described, ACS is an independent film society that will screen films over nine (9) months starting in March through November; culminating with the Asheville Cinema Festival scheduled for November 7-10, 2013. The Asheville Cinema Festival (ACF) is a natural progression for the society. Successfully completing its second festival in 2012, ACF screened high quality films, a popular shorts program and educational documentaries. Many of the filmmakers attended the festival to participate in the Q&A’s after the screenings. In addition to over 40 films shown during the festival, there were also several workshops for more in-depth discussion on a variety of film making subjects. ACF boasts of being able to secure and screen “The Artist” in 2011. “The Artist” went on to win the Academy Award for best picture of 2011. Prior to their national release, ACF screened “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Quartet,” both in contention for 2012 awards.

Our mission is to bring exceptional independent films of all genres that will not play in local theaters. Sometimes we will showcase bigger films before they will screen in Western North Carolina. We offer ACS Memberships to our seasons creating a large, dedicated group of people that attend screenings of films they would probably never get to see. Besides getting to see great films, the members really enjoy the intelligent discussion Q&As after each film with the filmmakers and special guests we bring in. As one member wrote us, “It’s not just going to the movies. It’s an enriching experience and unlike anything else in the area.”
